Derren Brown brings the Apocalypse to TV
British hypnotist and NLP expert, Derren Brown has taken the end times or Apocalypse to a whole new level though, by convincing one man that the end of the world has happened.
The TV experiment broadcast on the UK’s Channel 4, took one unknowing guy called Stephen, and by use of hypnotism, subliminal messages and a team of actors and set locations, convinces him that Armageddon is here.
Stephen leads a self-obsessed and lazy lifestyle, aged in his 20′s and living with his parents he represents much that is wrong in the world. Derren Brown chose Stephen for the Apocalypse experiment to teach him the value of life, and show him how to find his deeply hidden qualities of bravery and compassion.
The first episode broadcast Friday 26 October on Channel 4 at 9.00pm showed how Stephen was selected to be the guinea pig. The show follows the set-up as he is followed by hidden cameras, his phone is hacked to start showing news messages of an impending comet collision with Earth, and his friends and family all join in with the pretense.
Although it may all sound implausible, Derren Brown has excelled himself and created a genuine and believable event. As Stephen heads off to a Killers concert, the coach breaks down as the comets collide with Earth. He is then sent to sleep by Derren before waking up in what seems like a zombie apocalypse.
The result of seeing a normal guy genuinely terrified as he navigates a wasteland that was once his lazy-assed reality and his feelings of loss and bewilderment create scenes that are more believable than any movie or TV show. In fact many would go as far as to say that this is genre busting stuff.
